HELMETS HIDE HEROIN IN PORT AUTHORITY

New York City Special Narcotics Prosecutor Bridget G. Brennan announced today the indictment of 29-year old Joe Serrano-Marin, charged with possessing nearly two pounds of heroin with a street value in excess of one hundred thousand dollars. The Port Authority Canine Unit sniffed out the heroin, secreted between the lining and the outer part of two motorcycle helmets. The defendant, who traveled to New York via a New Jersey Transit bus, was arrested on Monday, May 21, 2007. Drug Enforcement Administration agents were called in and arrested Serrano-Marin. He was arraigned on a felony complaint charging him with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the First Degree, an A-1 felony, on Tuesday, May 22, 2007 before the Honorable Shawndya Simpson in New York City Criminal Court in Manhattan. Bail was set at $50,000 Bond or cash . The defendant is due to be arraigned on the indictmentthe indictment on June 28, 2007. A resident of 510 Shires Way, Egg Harbor, NJ, Serrano-Marin, faces 8 to 20 years on the A-1 charge if convicted.

The investigation was a joint effort by Drug Enforcement Administration New York Field Office, the Port Authority Police, the AMTRAK Police and the Office of the New York City Special Narcotics Prosecutor.
