New York City Special Narcotics Prosecutor Bridget G. Brennan announced today that five indictments were unsealed today charging defendants with narcotics dealing in the Langston Hughes Houses in Brooklyn. The defendants were arraigned Wednesday April 25, 2007 before the Honorable Brenda Soloff in New York State Supreme Court in Manhattan. In addition, four others were arrested Tuesday after a long-term investigation that targeted rampant drug dealing and related violence at the public housing development on Sutter Avenue in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn. The investigation was a joint effort by the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, the Federal Bureau of Investigation-New York Field Office, the New York City Police Department and the Office of the New York City Special Narcotics Prosecutor.
Evidence gathered during the investigation revealed that drug dealers operated a lucrative crack cocaine distribution network inside the Langston Hughes Housing Development in Brownsville, Brooklyn. Residents of the development were plagued by continuous drug dealing in the lobbies and hallways of the three-building complex. Undercover police officers successfully infiltrated this network and purchased crack cocaine from the defendants.
The eight defendants being prosecuted by Special Narcotics include three generations of a family who sold crack cocaine from their Langston Hughes apartment. They include: parents James “Willie” Hayes, Sr. and Harriet Bell, sons Christopher Hayes and Timothy Bell, and grandfather Thomas Tull.
