NEW YORK CITY SPECIAL NARCOTICS PROSECUTOR BRIDGET G. BRENNAN ANNOUNCED the indictment of 21 individuals connection with a year-long investigation into drug dealing in lobbies, halls, elevators and staircases at the Kingsborough Houses, a New York City Housing Authority complex in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn.
Arrests began early Wednesday morning as members of the New York City
Police Department Brooklyn North Narcotics Major Case Squad and Housing Police PSA 2 fanned out throughout the complex, which houses 2,362 residents in 1,154 apartments. Police apprehended 17 defendants on charges of selling crack/cocaine in the common areas of 13 of the complex’s 16 buildings. Four defendants were already incarcerated on other charges and will appear in court to face the new indictments.
Police executed four search warrants; two handguns and more than two hundred bags of crack were recovered. The indictments charge 205 sales to undercover officers over a year long period. The vast majority of the narcotics sales occurred inside the complex; at least 11 of those arrested are complex residents. Defendants will appear for arraignment today before Supreme Court Judge Michael Ambrecht at 111 Centre Street, Room 928, Part 21.
The investigation, initiated in August, 2007, in conjunction with PSA 2 of the Housing Police, recorded extensive daily drug activity. Groups of two or three dealers sold thousands of “nickel” ($5) and “dime” ($10) ziploc bags of crack/cocaine out of specific spots in first and second floor hallways, often blocking doors and clogging lobbies and stairwells. Some of the groups claimed they were in operation 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
During the past year, letters written by some who live in the complex depict a life of fear, where law abiding residents were forced to step around open drug sales to come and go from their own homes. At least four shootings occurred on or near the development during the course of the investigation, including one in which a bullet grazed a three-year old girl in the head as she sat near an apartment window.
Defendants previously indicted will be arraigned on charges that include Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance in the Third Degree, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Third Degree, and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second degree.
